Peresean — Where Courage is Tested

Traditional Martial Art

Two men, rattan sticks, and buffalo hide shields — Peresean is a traditional Sasak duel that symbolizes bravery and sportsmanship. Once held to invoke rain during dry seasons, it is today celebrated at cultural festivals across Central Lombok, drawing crowds who come to witness a living expression of Sasak identity.

More than a contest of strength, Peresean is guided by rules of honor. Fighters known as pepadu strike with rattan while a referee (pekembar) and traditional music keep the rhythm of courage and restraint.

At villages and festivals from Sade to Praya, Peresean remains a proud stage for Sasak heritage — raw, ceremonial, and deeply communal.
